PROFILO BEAR is an unusual luxury Italian 85% Merino / 15% Cashmere yarn with a distinctive eyelash / grass-like construction. The soft fringe creates extraordinary texture and volume while remaining surprisingly easy and comfortable to knit.
At 140m/100g (153y/3.52oz), BEAR is classified as Chunky, but it behaves very differently from a conventional thick spun yarn. After washing, the fringe opens beautifully and the stitches visually blend into a soft, plush surface that looks more like a finished textile or fur-like fabric than ordinary knitted yarn.

➤ My First Impressions
I knitted my sample in one strand on US 4 (3.5 mm) needles, and it was very easy and pleasant to knit.
Even though BEAR has a pronounced eyelash / grass-like structure, the fringe did not create any problems while knitting. The yarn worked easily on the needles, which was especially impressive considering how textured it looks on the cone.
The yarn is very, very soft, and after washing it opens beautifully. The fringe blooms and fills the surface, transforming the knitted stitches into a soft, dimensional fabric that looks almost like real fur.
Another feature I especially like is that the finished fabric looks beautiful on both sides. The two sides have slightly different character, but either one can be used as the visible side depending on the project and the effect you prefer.
I highly recommend this yarn. It is unusual, exceptionally soft, easy to knit, and becomes even more beautiful after washing.
✦ Texture & Feel
• Exceptionally soft Merino and Cashmere blend
• Distinctive eyelash / grass-like construction
• Plush volume without the appearance of a conventional heavy yarn
• Fringe opens beautifully after washing
• Creates a dimensional, fur-like textile surface
• Attractive on both sides of the knitted fabric
➤ Needles & Fabric Guide
• US 4 (3.5 mm) — personally tested in one strand and produced a dense, beautifully plush fabric
• Larger needles can be tested for a lighter, more open fabric
• The eyelash / grass-like structure does not make the yarn difficult to knit
• Simple stockinette works beautifully because the yarn itself creates the surface texture
• Always wash your swatch before choosing the final gauge — BEAR changes considerably as the fringe opens and the fabric blooms
⋔ Recommended Uses
• Plush sweaters and pullovers
• Cardigans and soft jackets
• Teddy-style vests
• Scarves and cowls
• Hats and winter accessories
• Collars, cuffs, and statement trim
• Textured panels and garment details
• Simple contemporary silhouettes where the yarn itself becomes the design
• Projects where either side of the fabric may be visible
➤ Approximate Yarn Requirements
• Sweater: 500–700g / 17.6–24.7oz
• Cardigan or jacket: 600–800g / 21.2–28.2oz
• Vest: 300–450g / 10.6–15.9oz
• Scarf or cowl: 150–300g / 5.3–10.6oz
• Hat: 100–150g / 3.5–5.3oz
• Collar, cuffs, or decorative accents: 50–150g / 1.8–5.3oz
Actual requirements depend on size, gauge, garment construction, needle size, and desired fabric density.
➤ Complete the Project — Recommended From iDOKNiT
BEAR is beautiful used by itself, and this is my first recommendation. Its softness, volume, and unusual texture already create a complete fabric. If you want to change the character of the fabric, choose a very fine companion yarn with a specific purpose.
• HARMONY by Tollegno 1900 — 100% Extra Fine Merino, 1500m/100g — adds elasticity, stability, and a little more body while keeping the project entirely within the soft wool family. Its very fine construction adds minimal additional bulk.
• ELEGANCE — 100% Cashmere, 1800m/100g — the finest Cashmere option for adding extra softness, warmth, and a delicate Cashmere halo with very little additional thickness.
• PRESTIGE — 100% Cashmere, 1300m/100g — a slightly fuller Cashmere companion for a richer, softer, more substantial luxury fabric while still allowing BEAR's distinctive texture to remain the focus.
• SHINE by Botto Giuseppe — 100% Mulberry Silk, 3000m/100g — adds fluidity, drape, strength, and natural Silk luster with very little additional thickness. An especially interesting choice when you want the plush BEAR fabric to have more movement and a more elegant fall.
Complete Choice — Needles
• US 4 (3.5 mm) — personally tested with BEAR in one strand and produced a dense, plush fabric after washing
• Larger needles can be tested when a lighter, more open fabric is desired
• ChiaoGoo Knitting Needles — choose the size according to the fabric you want to create
⫯ Weaving Suitability
• Excellent as a decorative weft yarn
• Creates a soft, dimensional, fur-like surface
• Particularly interesting for scarves, panels, textile accents, and mixed-texture fabrics
• For warp use, sample first because the projecting fringe may experience abrasion under tension
⟳ Care Instructions
• Hand wash gently in cool water using a detergent suitable for Merino and Cashmere
• Do not rub, wring, or aggressively agitate
• Gently press excess water out with a towel
• Reshape and lay flat to dry
• Allow the fabric to dry completely so the fringe can open and develop its full texture
• Always wash and dry a swatch before beginning the final project
