This Is Why People Love Malabrigo
Long before I started carrying Malabrigo at iDOKNiT, I kept hearing this name from knitters. At that time, I was knitting custom projects and constantly looking for interesting yarns, new colors and different fibers. And somehow Malabrigo kept coming up again and again.
People didn't just say, “This is a good yarn.” They talked about Malabrigo with warmth. There was almost something magical about the way knitters described it, and naturally, I became very curious. I wanted to touch it. I wanted to knit with it. I wanted to understand what made people love this yarn so much.
So when I finally had the opportunity not only to try Malabrigo myself, but also to bring it to iDOKNiT and share it with you, of course I took it. And then I understood.
The colors are incredible. You can look at these skeins again and again because the color isn't flat or boring. It changes. It has depth. It has little unexpected shades inside it. Some colors are quiet, some are dramatic, but they feel alive and beautifully rich.

And because Malabrigo is hand-dyed, every skein has its own character. Even skeins with the same color name can be slightly different. That is part of the beauty of it.
It also means that if you're planning a larger project, I always recommend buying enough yarn at once — and preferably a little extra. You may not be able to come back months later and find another skein that looks exactly the same. But isn't that also what makes it special? Your project cannot be exactly duplicated.
And now, with Christmas getting closer, I've been thinking about this yarn in a completely different way. Imagine knitting someone a pair of socks from a beautiful hand-dyed Malabrigo yarn. They're already handmade. Nobody else can make exactly the same pair because you made them.
But then think about the yarn itself — where it came from, the people involved in creating it, the hands that dyed it, all those beautiful variations in color, and finally your own hands turning it into something for someone you care about. You cannot walk into a store and buy that exact gift.
And it doesn't have to be socks. A hat. Mittens. A scarf. A beautiful shawl. A sweater. Even a relatively small project can become something very special when the yarn itself already has so much character.
That's what I love about knitting. We talk about warmth all the time because yarn keeps us physically warm. But there is another kind of warmth in something handmade. Someone chose the yarn. Someone chose the color. Someone sat down and spent hours making it. And someone else will wear it and know exactly who made it for them.
With Malabrigo, I think the yarn adds one more little chapter to that story. Beautiful fibers, extraordinary hand-dyed colors, and then your own work on top of all of it. Maybe that's why, all those years ago, I kept noticing how warmly knitters talked about Malabrigo. Now I understand.
