LANASHETLAND by PROFILO is a fine Italian yarn made from 80% Shetland Wool and 20% Polyamide, with 600m/100g (656y/3.52oz). Lightweight, warm, and naturally woolly, it has the authentic slightly rustic character associated with Shetland Wool rather than the polished softness of Merino, Cashmere, or Alpaca.

The beautiful mélange colors are one of the highlights of this yarn. Subtle variations within each shade create depth in even simple stockinette and make the palette especially attractive for Fair Isle, jacquard, intarsia, stripes, and modern color-block designs.

➤ My First Impressions
I knitted my sample holding two strands together on US 4 (3.5 mm) needles, and the yarn was very easy to knit.

On the cone, it feels dry and just slightly scratchy. It is definitely not a super-soft yarn, but I actually like its rustic and natural character. After washing, the fibers open and the fabric becomes noticeably softer and more pleasant while retaining that beautiful woolly appearance.

I especially love the mélange colors. They look natural and sophisticated and are very easy to combine with each other. For me, this is a perfect yarn for intarsia, color blocking, jacquard, Fair Isle, and other projects where color is part of the design.

✦ Texture & Feel:
• Dry, slightly rustic hand before washing
• Natural woolly texture with a soft halo
• Lightweight and warm
• Mélange construction creates subtle tonal depth
• Softens and blooms with wet finishing
• 20% Polyamide helps add strength and durability

➤ Multi-Strand Gauge & Needles Guide

➤ Recommended Uses:
• Fair Isle and stranded colorwork
• Intarsia and jacquard
• Color-block and striped designs
• Nordic and traditional-style knitwear
• Sweaters and cardigans
• Vests and layering pieces
• Scarves, shawls, and wraps
• Hats and accessories

✧ Tips & Recommendations:
Because LANASHETLAND is 600m/100g, it offers considerable flexibility. Use it alone for fine lightweight knitting, hold multiple strands together for a heavier fabric, or combine it with another fine yarn to introduce a different texture or fiber.

You can also hold two different LANASHETLAND colors together to create your own custom mélange shades.

I strongly recommend washing your swatch before deciding on the final needle size and fabric density, since the yarn changes noticeably during wet finishing.

➤ Approximate Yarn Requirements
• Lightweight sweater: 300–450g / 10.6–15.9oz
• Cardigan: 350–550g / 12.3–19.4oz
• Vest: 200–350g / 7.1–12.3oz
• Shawl or wrap: 150–250g / 5.3–8.8oz
• Scarf: 120–200g / 4.2–7.1oz
• Hat: 70–100g / 2.5–3.5oz

Actual requirements depend on size, gauge, stitch pattern, strand count, and design.

➤ Recommended Pairings From iDOKNiT
Natural Fibers
• Baby Alpaca — adds softness and halo
• Merino — adds softness and elasticity
• Cashmere — creates a softer, more luxurious hand
• Silk — adds smoothness and drape
• Linen — adds structure and textural contrast

Recommended Pairings Available at iDOKNiT
SOFIA by PROFILO — 80% Baby Alpaca / 20% Merino, 600m/100g; especially interesting because the matching meterage makes blending straightforward while adding softness and a silky halo
CASHWOOL by Zegna Baruffa — Extrafine Merino for a smoother, softer wool blend
HARMONY by Tollegno / Lana Gatto — Extrafine Merino for additional softness and elasticity
CRISTALLO by Filati Power — Merino, Silk, and Cashmere for a richer luxury blend
PAILLETTES by PROFILO — Cashmere with delicate paillettes for subtle sparkle
MICIO by NEW MILL — Cashmere and Silk for additional softness and fluffy texture
QUARANTALINO by Toscano — ultra-fine Linen for added structure and an unusual fiber combination

My Recommendation: For multicolor knitting, I would first combine different LANASHETLAND shades with each other and take advantage of its beautiful coordinated mélange palette. If you want to soften the fabric while preserving its character, SOFIA by PROFILO would be my first companion choice.

⫯ Weaving Suitability

• Gently remove excess water with a towel
• Reshape and lay flat to dry
• Avoid excessive heat

Formats: Balls (BY DEFAULT) or Cones (PLEASE PURCHASE)

FOR FULL-CONE SALES, THERE IS NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE FOR THE CONE. Yarn will remain on its original cone.

FOR YARN THAT IS NOT SOLD AS A FULL CONE BUT IN VARIOUS WOUND WEIGHTS, ALL YARN WILL BE WOUND INTO BALLS BY DEFAULT. CONES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE YARN PRICE. However, we can wind it onto cones upon request. Cones may be purchased separately if you prefer continuous yardage for machine knitting or multi-strand projects. One color is typically wound per cone to maintain consistency.

PLEASE BUY CONES HERE

Unlike other shops where cone costs are often built into the yarn price—regardless of the format—our pricing is transparent. You pay only for the yarn itself. If you’d like your order wound on a cone, it can be purchased separately. This small additional charge also helps cover packaging differences and the actual cost of the cone. No hidden fees, no inflated markups—just honest, straightforward pricing.

Please Note

  • Please keep in mind: cone yarns, especially those made with extra fine merino or cashmere, may include a protective coating used for industrial knitting. A few gentle washes will allow the yarn to bloom, soften, and reveal its natural texture.
  • Colors are photographed in natural light but may appear slightly different depending on your screen.
  • FOR YARN THAT IS CUSTOM-WOUND, ±1–2g variation per 100g may occur due to winding.
  • Each ball/cone is wound with care and packed securely to ensure it reaches you in perfect condition.

Shipping & Order Processing

Orders are prepared in the order received and typically ship within 3–5 business days. Custom requests such as cone winding may require additional time. Multiple orders placed before shipment may be combined. Shipping refunds are not issued for combined orders.

We ship worldwide with tracking provided. As customs policies and tariffs can change frequently, any duties, taxes, or import fees are the sole responsibility of the buyer. These charges are not collected by us at the time of purchase but are typically paid to your local postal service or customs office upon the arrival of your package.
