Discover FILICUDI by ECAFIL, Italy, a premium 100% Organic Mercerized Cotton yarn with a beautiful chainette construction that gives the strand remarkable volume while keeping the finished fabric lightweight and breathable. Unlike a traditional tightly twisted cotton yarn, FILICUDI resembles a tiny knitted cord, creating a rounded, dimensional strand with a sophisticated, modern appearance.
At 350 meters / 383 yards per 100g / 3.52 oz, FILICUDI is classified as Sport Weight, but its unusual construction makes it look and behave very differently from an ordinary smooth cotton of the same meterage. The chainette structure traps space within the strand, creating visual fullness without unnecessary weight—an especially attractive characteristic for comfortable summer garments.
Mercerization gives this premium organic cotton a smoother, cleaner surface with subtle luster while enhancing the natural qualities of the fiber. The result is a refined Italian cotton yarn with excellent stitch definition, beautiful color clarity, and a polished appearance suitable for sophisticated warm-weather knitwear.

⌁ Texture & Feel
FILICUDI is noticeably different from a conventional tightly twisted Sport-weight cotton. Its chainette construction resembles a very fine knitted cord, producing a rounded, dimensional strand with more visual body than you might expect from 350m/100g (383y/3.52oz).
This is important when choosing the yarn because meterage alone does not tell the entire story. Two cotton yarns with the same yards or meters per 100g can create very different fabrics depending on their construction. FILICUDI's chainette structure provides beautiful volume while keeping the yarn relatively light.
The mercerized cotton has a smooth, clean hand rather than a fuzzy surface. It provides crisp stitch definition and a refined subtle sheen, making it particularly attractive for contemporary summer garments and stitch patterns where you want the structure of the knitting to remain clearly visible.
➤ Recommended Uses
Perfect for summer tops, T-shirts, polos, shells, lightweight sweaters, cardigans, dresses, skirts, tanks, openwork summer garments, lace designs, children's garments, scarves, accessories, crochet, machine knitting, and selected weaving projects.
FILICUDI is especially interesting for garments where you want breathability, structure, and visual volume without a heavy fabric.
✧ Tips & Recommendations
For hand knitting, I recommend starting with one strand. FILICUDI already has substantial dimensional volume because of its chainette construction and does not need to be treated like a conventional fine industrial cone yarn that requires multiple strands.
Chainette yarns can behave quite differently from traditionally twisted cotton, so always knit and wash a swatch before beginning your project. Your needle or hook size can then be adjusted according to the fabric you want.
Use smaller needles for a firmer fabric with stronger stitch definition, or larger needles for a lighter, more relaxed fabric with additional drape and breathability.
Simple stockinette beautifully displays the clean mercerized surface, while ribs, textured stitches, lace, and openwork patterns can emphasize the dimensional character of the strand.
➤ Recommended Needles/Hooks
Because FILICUDI's dimensional chainette construction affects its finished gauge considerably, I recommend choosing the final needle or hook size from a washed swatch rather than relying only on its Sport-weight meterage.
• Hand Knitting: Start with one strand and select needle size according to desired fabric and gauge
• Crochet: Start with one strand and select hook size according to desired density and drape
• Manufacturer Machine-Knitting Recommendation: Flat knitting machine gauge 5
• Always knit or crochet and wash a swatch before beginning your project
➤ Machine Knitting
ECAFIL specifies flat knitting machine gauge 5 for FILICUDI 3500. This is the manufacturer's industrial machine-knitting recommendation and should not be confused with a US hand-knitting needle size.
The unusual chainette construction gives the yarn sufficient body to create dimensional fabrics while maintaining a relatively lightweight structure, making it particularly interesting for refined machine-knit summer garments.
➤ Weaving Suitability
FILICUDI can also create beautiful textured woven fabrics. Its dimensional chainette construction provides considerably more surface interest than a conventional smooth cotton yarn.
I particularly recommend considering it for weft applications, decorative weaving, scarves, summer apparel fabrics, and projects where the visible structure of the yarn becomes part of the finished design.
For warp applications, always sample first. Chainette yarn behaves differently under sustained loom tension than a conventional tightly twisted cotton yarn.
⋔ Recommended Yarn Usage
• Summer Top: 250–350g / 8.8–12.3 oz
• Short-Sleeve Sweater: 300–400g / 10.6–14.1 oz
• Long-Sleeve Sweater: 400–550g / 14.1–19.4 oz
• Cardigan: 400–600g / 14.1–21.2 oz
• Summer Dress: 500–750g / 17.6–26.5 oz
• Scarf or Wrap: 150–250g / 5.3–8.8 oz
• Children's Garments: 150–300g / 5.3–10.6 oz
Actual yarn requirements will vary depending on garment size, stitch pattern, gauge, needle or hook size, and desired fabric density.
➤ Recommended Pairings From iDOKNiT
FILICUDI is beautiful enough to use entirely on its own, but its smooth organic cotton construction also makes it an interesting foundation for custom fiber combinations.
Natural Fibers
• Silk – Adds additional drape, softness, and elegant luminosity
• Linen – Enhances its natural summer character and adds crisp texture
• Cashmere – Adds exceptional softness for transitional-season garments
• Fine Merino – Adds elasticity, softness, and warmth
• Kid Mohair – Creates an interesting contrast between structured cotton and a delicate airy halo
My Recommendation: FILICUDI is much more interesting than a conventional 350m/100g Sport-weight cotton. Its tiny knitted chainette construction gives the yarn beautiful dimensional volume while preserving the breathability and comfort of organic cotton. If you enjoy clean, sophisticated summer fabrics with excellent stitch definition and a refined Italian finish, this is a particularly interesting cotton to try.

Please Note
- Please keep in mind: cone yarns, especially those made with extra fine merino or cashmere, may include a protective coating used for industrial knitting. A few gentle washes will allow the yarn to bloom, soften, and reveal its natural texture.
- Colors are photographed in natural light but may appear slightly different depending on your screen.
- FOR YARN THAT IS CUSTOM-WOUND, ±1–2g variation per 100g may occur due to winding.
- Each ball/cone is wound with care and packed securely to ensure it reaches you in perfect condition.
