LORO PIANA FETTUCCIA INDIAN SILK is not a conventional yarn. It is an extraordinary 100% Indian Silk flat knitted ribbon, approximately 6–7 mm wide, with a substantial yet flexible construction and beautiful natural Silk luster.
This is a yarn where the material itself becomes the design. Its width, flat construction, movement, and natural shine create effects that look completely different from fabric made with conventional round yarn. It is an unusual material for knitters, crocheters, textile artists, and designers who enjoy experimenting with structure and surface.
This is not a yarn that tells you what to make. It is a material that invites you to experiment.

➤ My First Impressions
This is one of the most unusual Silk yarns I have worked with. The ribbon is smooth, substantial, flexible, and has the distinctive crisp character of pure Silk. When gently compressed in the hand, it even makes that recognizable crunching sound almost like fresh snow.
I knitted my sample in one strand on US 10 (6.0 mm) needles, and it was surprisingly easy to work with. I would also experiment with US 15 (10.0 mm), or even larger needles, to create more open and dramatic stitches.
After washing, the Silk itself does not change dramatically. With time, however, the stitches begin to relax and settle, and areas where the flat ribbon has twisted can become more balanced and even.
✦ The Ribbon Becomes the Design
Oversized Graphic Stitches — Each large Silk loop becomes a visible design element. Even simple stitches can create a bold, contemporary surface.
Sculptural Surface — The ribbon bends, curves, overlaps, and rises from the fabric, giving the textile dimension rather than the uniform surface of conventional knitting.
Light & Shadow — The flat Silk surface catches light differently as it bends. Flat areas show the natural Silk luster while folds and curves create shadow, giving even a single WHITE color surprising visual depth.
Open Architecture — With larger needles, the spaces between the oversized stitches become part of the design. The result can be an open, architectural textile built from both Silk and negative space.
Intentional Twist — For an even surface, allow the ribbon to feed as flat as possible. For experimental work, however, controlled twists can become part of the design: a ribbon turned on its edge reflects light and creates shape differently from one lying flat.
➤ How to Work With FETTUCCIA
For the smoothest result, I recommend placing the cone on a rotating yarn holder or spindle, allowing the entire cone to turn as the ribbon unwinds. Pulling continuously upward from a stationary cone can introduce unwanted twists into the flat ribbon.
If a twist develops, simply allow the ribbon to untwist before continuing. Simple stitches work particularly well because they allow the width, curves, folds, and natural Silk luster to remain visible.
✦ Used Alone — or With a Touch of Eyelash
My first recommendation is to use FETTUCCIA by itself. It already has enough scale, structure, and visual character to create an extraordinary textile.
One combination I find especially interesting is a fine grass or eyelash yarn.Rather than adding another substantial strand, the fine fibers can appear through the open spaces between the large smooth Silk loops, creating a delicate fuzzy contrast without hiding the FETTUCCIA.
➤ Complete the Project — Needles
For my sample, I used US 10 (6.0 mm) needles in one strand. I also recommend experimenting with US 15 (10.0 mm) or larger if you want a more open, architectural fabric with larger visible Silk loops.
For this unusual ribbon yarn, interchangeable needles are especially practical because you can easily test different needle sizes before deciding which fabric you prefer.

⋔ Ideas & Inspiration
FETTUCCIA is not a yarn for which I want to prescribe a standard project. Its unusual construction invites experimentation.
• Sculptural vests
• Open statement cardigans
• Dramatic collars, trims, and garment details
• Luxury knitted or crocheted bags
• Statement scarves and wraps
• Textile jewelry and unusual accessories
• Decorative textile panels
• Wall pieces and textile art
• Sculptural crochet
• Luxury decorative mats or low-traffic accent rugs
• Experimental interior textile pieces
• Mixed-texture designs with a very fine grass or eyelash yarn
A simple design may actually be one of the best choices. You do not need complicated stitches to create an interesting surface — the Silk ribbon is already creating it for you.
➤ About Project Quantities
Because FETTUCCIA is an unconventional specialty ribbon, I do not provide standard project yarn requirements. Consumption can vary dramatically depending on needle or hook size, stitch construction, openness, project dimensions, and how the ribbon is incorporated into the design.
Please make a sample first and determine the amount required for your individual project.
➤ Original Loro Piana Cones — Sold Individually
The original cones are relatively small and vary in weight. Each cone is weighed and listed individually, allowing you to select the exact available amount you would like to purchase.
• Each cone is sold individually
• Actual cone weights vary
• Plastic cone weight is approximately 42g / 1.48 oz
• Net Silk weight is calculated separately
⫯ Weaving & Textile Art
The flat Silk construction can also create bold lines, dimensional surfaces, and light-and-shadow effects in weaving and mixed-media textile work. It can be particularly interesting as a statement weft, combined with much finer materials or incorporated selectively as a dimensional design element.
For warp applications, sampling is recommended because the ribbon may respond differently to sustained tension and abrasion than conventional spun yarn.

Please Note
Please Note
- Please keep in mind: cone yarns, especially those made with extra fine merino or cashmere, may include a protective coating used for industrial knitting. A few gentle washes will allow the yarn to bloom, soften, and reveal its natural texture.
- Colors are photographed in natural light but may appear slightly different depending on your screen.
- FOR YARN THAT IS CUSTOM-WOUND, ±1–2g variation per 100g may occur due to winding.
- Each ball/cone is wound with care and packed securely to ensure it reaches you in perfect condition.
