CASHWOOL by Zegna Baruffa is an iconic Italian extrafine Merino wool yarn, perfectly spun to create clean, refined fabrics with beautiful stitch definition and the polished appearance associated with premium Italian knitwear. Smooth and precise before washing, CASHWOOL softens and blooms beautifully after finishing while maintaining its elegant structure.
At 1500 meters per 100g, this is an exceptionally versatile building yarn. By simply changing the number of strands held together, you can create everything from delicate lace fabrics to lightweight sweaters, comfortable everyday knitwear, and warmer garments while maintaining the same exceptional Merino quality.

⌁ Texture & Feel
CASHWOOL has a smooth, refined hand and beautifully even construction. It feels polished rather than fluffy on the cone, but washing allows the Merino fibers to relax and develop a gentle natural bloom while maintaining excellent stitch definition.
In my experience, CASHWOOL sits beautifully in the middle: not as dry and crisp as SUPERGEELONG, yet not as silky as HARMONY. It has an exceptionally balanced Merino feel—soft and comfortable while still providing enough structure for beautifully defined knitting.
➤ Strand Weight Guide
• 1–2 strands — Lace — 1500–750m/100g
• 3 strands — Light Fingering — 500m/100g
• 4 strands — Fingering — 375m/100g
• 5 strands — Sport — 300m/100g
• 6 strands — Sport — 250m/100g
• 7 strands — DK — 214m/100g
• 8 strands — DK — 188m/100g
For hand knitting, I recommend starting with 4–6 strands, depending on the desired fabric. Five strands produce 300m/100g and are an excellent starting point for a comfortable, versatile sweater fabric.
Always knit and wash a swatch before beginning your project to determine your preferred strand count, gauge, and finished fabric.
➤ Recommended Uses
Perfect for sweaters, cardigans, vests, tops, scarves, shawls, wraps, hats, baby garments, fine accessories, sophisticated layering pieces, machine knitting, weaving, and custom multi-strand combinations.
CASHWOOL is also an exceptional companion yarn. Add one or more strands to Cashmere, Silk, Mohair, Alpaca, Linen, Cotton, or other fibers to introduce Merino softness, elasticity, warmth, and structure.
✧ Tips & Recommendations
Because CASHWOOL is extremely fine, its greatest advantage is flexibility. Instead of being limited to one predetermined yarn weight, you can simply adjust the number of strands to create exactly the fabric your project requires.
For lightweight garments, start with four strands. Five strands create a versatile Sport-weight fabric at 300m/100g, while six strands produce a slightly warmer and denser Sport-weight fabric at 250m/100g.
Simple stockinette beautifully showcases CASHWOOL's smooth, refined surface, while ribs, cables, and textured stitches benefit from its excellent stitch definition.
Always wash your swatch. CASHWOOL's finished appearance, softness, and bloom become much more apparent after wet finishing.
➤ Recommended Needles/Hooks
• 4 strands: US 2.5–6 (3.0–4.0 mm)
• 5 strands: US 4–7 (3.5–4.5 mm)
• 6 strands: US 6–8 (4.0–5.0 mm)
• Crochet: Select hook size according to strand count and desired fabric
• Always knit and wash a swatch before beginning your project
➤ Weaving Suitability
Excellent for weaving when used with appropriate sett and tension. CASHWOOL's fine, consistent construction makes it particularly suitable for lightweight, refined wool fabrics.
Multiple ends can be used together to increase fabric weight and density. Sampling and wet finishing are strongly recommended because the Merino develops additional softness and bloom after washing.
⋔ Recommended Yarn Usage
Actual requirements depend heavily on strand count, garment size, gauge, stitch pattern, and desired fabric density.
• Hat: 80–150g
• Scarf: 150–280g
• Sweater: 300–650g
• Cardigan: 350–750g
• Shawl or Wrap: 150–300g
• Baby Sweater: 100–180g
➤ Recommended Pairings From iDOKNiT
CASHWOOL is one of the most versatile foundation yarns for creating custom blends. Its smooth Merino construction contributes softness, elasticity, warmth, and stability without overwhelming the character of the companion yarn.
Natural Fibers
• Cashmere – Adds exceptional softness and warmth.
• Silk – Adds elegant drape and subtle sheen.
• Kid Mohair – Creates a lightweight halo and additional warmth.
• Alpaca – Adds loft and softness.
• Linen – Combines Merino elasticity with natural linen texture.
• Cotton – Adds structure while maintaining breathability.
My Recommendation: CASHWOOL is a true building yarn. Keep the beautiful characteristics of premium extrafine Merino while choosing your own finished weight simply by changing the number of strands. It is equally valuable as a standalone yarn and as a foundation for creating your own luxury fiber combinations.
⟳ Care Instructions
• Hand wash gently in cool water using a wool-safe detergent
• Do not wring or twist
• Gently press excess water out with a towel
• Lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight
• Reshape and block gently while damp
• Wet finishing allows the Merino fibers to relax, soften, and develop their characteristic natural bloom.

⚑ FOR FULL-CONE SALES, THERE IS NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE FOR THE CONE. Yarn will remain on its original cone.
⚑ FOR YARN THAT IS NOT SOLD AS A FULL CONE BUT IN VARIOUS WOUND WEIGHTS, ALL YARN WILL BE WOUND INTO BALLS BY DEFAULT. CONES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE YARN PRICE. One color is typically wound per cone to maintain consistency.
PLEASE BUY CONES HERE
Unlike other shops where cone costs are often built into the yarn price—regardless of the format—our pricing is transparent. You pay only for the yarn itself. If you’d like your order wound on a cone, it can be purchased separately. This small additional charge also helps cover packaging differences and the actual cost of the cone. No hidden fees, no inflated markups—just honest, straightforward pricing.
Please Note
Please Note
- Please keep in mind: cone yarns, especially those made with extra fine merino or cashmere, may include a protective coating used for industrial knitting. A few gentle washes will allow the yarn to bloom, soften, and reveal its natural texture.
- Colors are photographed in natural light but may appear slightly different depending on your screen.
- FOR YARN THAT IS CUSTOM-WOUND, ±1–2g variation per 100g may occur due to winding.
- Each ball/cone is wound with care and packed securely to ensure it reaches you in perfect condition.
