What if one fine strand could completely transform another yarn? RiGo CRISTALLO is an unusual Italian effect yarn made from 75% Cotton, 15% Lurex and 10% Polyamide, with irregular flamé-like cocoons, tiny textured knots and flashes of metallic Lurex appearing along the strand.

CRISTALLO can be knitted alone, but from my experience, its real magic appears when it is used as a companion yarn. Hold it with Merino, Mohair, Cashmere, Silk, Alpaca, Cotton or another smooth yarn and an ordinary knitted surface can become dimensional, sophisticated and distinctly fashion-forward — with the irregular texture and restrained sparkle associated with modern tweed-inspired fabrics.

And this look is particularly relevant now: CHANEL's Fall/Winter 2026 collection prominently uses Lurex & Wool Tweed, including jackets, skirts and coats, while the collection itself explores tweed, Lurex and other dimensional materials. CRISTALLO is not a CHANEL yarn, but it offers knitters a fascinating way to experiment with this same broader idea of texture + irregularity + light in their own fabric.

✦ My First Impression
CRISTALLO is one of those yarns I would buy for what it can do to other yarns.

The cotton-based strand gives it stability and makes it useful across seasons, while the irregular little cocoons and Lurex accents interrupt the surface just enough to make a simple fabric interesting. The Lurex is visible, but this is not a yarn I would describe as simply “glitter yarn.” The effect is much more sophisticated: texture first, flashes of light second.

Personally, I prefer CRISTALLO as a companion rather than knitting an entire garment from it alone. Combined with another yarn, those irregular details become scattered through the fabric and can create a beautiful tweed-like or Chanel-inspired effect without requiring complicated stitchwork.

It is also surprisingly versatile. Pair it with Cotton, Linen or Silk for a lighter spring/summer fabric; combine it with Merino, Cashmere, Mohair or Alpaca and the same CRISTALLO becomes part of a completely different fall/winter fabric.

✦ CREATE YOUR OWN TWEED-LIKE FABRIC
This is where CRISTALLO becomes especially interesting.

Start with a relatively simple base yarn and add one strand of CRISTALLO. The base determines the softness, warmth, drape and basic gauge; CRISTALLO supplies the irregular surface, tiny cocoons and flashes of Lurex.

For a modern jacket or cardigan, I would especially consider stockinette, moss stitch, garter stitch or another relatively simple structure. There is little reason to make the stitch pattern compete with a yarn that is already creating its own surface.

Think boxy jackets, relaxed cardigans, oversized sweaters, sweater-jackets, vests, skirts, wraps and coordinated knitted sets. CRISTALLO can also be particularly effective for trims, cuffs, collars, pockets or selected panels when you want the effect without using it throughout the entire garment.

The idea is especially timely: CHANEL's current Fall/Winter 2026 collection includes Lurex-and-wool tweed jackets and skirts, while recent fashion coverage describes renewed experimentation with tweed, texture and luminous materials.

➤ Knitting & Crochet
Because CRISTALLO ranges from approximately 600 to 900 m/100 g depending on color, and because I particularly recommend it as a companion yarn, there is no single needle size that makes sense for every project.

When holding CRISTALLO together with another yarn, choose your needle or hook according to the combined fabric, not according to CRISTALLO alone.

Start by swatching your base yarn, then add CRISTALLO and compare. You may find that the same base yarn suddenly needs a slightly larger needle because the decorative strand changes the fabric's density and surface.

For knitting CRISTALLO alone, fine needles can produce a controlled lightweight fabric, while larger needles create a more open, decorative textile. Swatching is particularly important because the meterage and structure vary among colors.

➤ How Much CRISTALLO Do I Need?
When CRISTALLO is used as a carry-along companion, calculate the amount primarily by meterage rather than grams.

If your base yarn requires approximately 1,000 meters and CRISTALLO is carried continuously throughout the project, you will need approximately the same 1,000 meters of CRISTALLO. The actual weight required therefore depends on whether your selected CRISTALLO color is 600, 700, 800 or 900 m/100 g.

This is much more accurate than giving one universal “grams per sweater” estimate for an effect yarn whose meterage varies substantially by color.

If CRISTALLO is used only for borders, panels, stripes, pockets or other accents, considerably less will be required.

⫯ Weaving Notes
CRISTALLO is an especially interesting effect weft for hand weaving. Its cotton-rich construction provides stability while the irregular cocoons and Lurex accents can introduce dimensional texture and changing reflections across the cloth.

It can be particularly effective for tweed-inspired yardage, scarves, wraps, jacket fabrics, decorative panels and couture-style textiles when combined with smoother yarns.

For warp, sample first. The decorative irregularities must pass comfortably through your particular heddles and reed, and loom tension should be appropriate for the selected CRISTALLO variation.

When combining CRISTALLO with another yarn, testing several needle sizes is particularly useful because even a small gauge change can dramatically alter how prominently the cocoons and Lurex appear.
